Introduction to the Design and Cost of Steel Seismic Connections

As a follow up to the January 2018 presentation, “Selecting the Appropriate Seismic System for Your Steel Project,” this presentation will provide more detailed information regarding the strength and detailing requirements for structural steel braced frame connections used in low, moderate, and high seismic systems. The cost of such connections will also be discussed comparing the costs associated between the different levels of seismic requirements.

Similar information for moment frame connections will be discussed in a supplemental recorded session to be posted in the SEU Resource Center.

 

Learning Objectives

By participating in this session, participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of how forces are distributed, using the uniform force method, in braced frame connections when braces frame to beam-column joints.
  • Develop an understanding of the required brace connections forces as required in AISC 341 for ordinary and special concentric braced frames.
  • Develop an understanding of the various strength and detailing requirements for “R=3,” ordinary, and special concentric braced frames.
