Speaker: Roger A. LaBoube, PhD, PE

Built-up members are common framing members such as boundary studs, trimmer joists, stud packs, and headers. This SE University session will review the applicable AISI S100 and S240 design provisions for built-up compression members and built-up flexural members, and the various design requirements and limit states applicable for creating a cold-formed steel built-up member will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the applicable cold-formed steel design standards for framing members vs. other cold-formed steel applications.
  • Identify economical design solutions for cold-formed steel stud packs.
  • Develop the ability to design a built-up box-beam that is not specifically enabled by the current cold-formed steel design standards.
