HSS Truss Connections – Classifications {Video}

When designing truss connections using HSS members, there are 3 main classifications for the types of connections – K Connections (includes N), Y Connections (includes T), and Cross, or X Connections. How these classifications are applied to a connection is based NOT on the physical appearance of the connection, but rather on how the force is transferred through the connection.

In this 4:25 video clip from our February 2014 SE University session, Kim Olson, PE, of FORSE Consulting, reviews the different classifications of truss connections, and shows examples from AISC Design Guide 24 in which a truss may appear to be one type of connection, but should actually be designed as another.
