Do you need a quick reference for plate washer sizes? Has a Contractor recently requested this information from you?
SE University is compiling examples of Common Requests for Information (RFIs) sent to the Structural Engineer of Record. Following each RFI, we provide some resource information based on experience from contributing structural engineers. We hope you will find this resource information useful as you customize it to meet your specific project needs. Tips to avoid the RFI during the design phase may also be offered.

RFI #4: Provide washer plate sizes required at anchor rods and high-strength fasteners.
Example: Plate washer sizes may not have been specified for varying anchor rod diameters, and the Contractor requests clarification on sizes required.
Resource Information:
- Plate washer sizes for anchor rods can be found in AISC 13th Edition Table 14-2 and AISC Design Guide 1, 2nd Edition, Table 2.3.
- Plate washer sizes required for high-strength fasteners can be found in AISC RCSC Specification Table 6.1 and AISC 13th Edition Table 7-15.
- Plate washer sizes should be provided for each anchor rod or fastener diameter. One sample approach for anchor rod plate washers could be to provide a column base schedule that includes anchor embedment, base plate hole diameters, and plate washer sizes for each anchor rod diameter.
