Soil-Structure Interaction – Sample Checklists Available from NIST {Video}

In the May 2015 SE University session, Mat Foundations and Soil Structure Interaction, Ian McFarlane, PE, SE from Magnusson Klemencic Associates discussed sample checklists that are available to help facilitate the implementation of soil-structure interaction on a project. These checklists outline information needed by both the structural and geotechnical engineers, and are included in Chapter 6 of the NIST Document Soil-Structure Interaction for Building Structures (NIST GCR 12-917-21).

In the 2:30 video clip shown below, Ian discusses how the checklists can be used to make sure both the geotechnical and structural engineer receive the information they need in order to best implement soil-structure interaction in the modeling and design on a project.

Two checklists are included in Chapter 6 of the NIST Document; one checklist includes information that should be provided to the geotechnical engineer, including Differential Settlement Tolerance and Approximate Fundamental Building Period. A second checklist includes information that the structural engineer should request from the geotechnical engineer, including Modulus of Subgrade Reaction and Active and Passive Pressures for Retaining Walls. Chapter 6 begins on page 107 of the PDF document, and the checklists begin on page 117.
