Seismic Design – Appropriate Implementation of the Overstrength Omega o Factor (12:30pm – 2pm Eastern)
Using HSS members for trusses and braces can lead to more efficient members and cost savings in handling and erection, but attention must be paid to connection requirements during member design in order to achieve these savings. Economy can be realized by observing main member to brace member size ratios and specifying fewer members, which will also lead to fewer connection designs.
This SE University session included a discussion of the classification of HSS truss joints, and a look at what limit states apply to which joints. The different types of brace connections were presented, along with their advantages and disadvantages, and tips on making connection design more economical were provided.
Session Length: 1.5 hours
