Seismic Design – Appropriate Implementation of the Overstrength Omega o Factor (12:30pm – 2pm Eastern)
The design of tilt-up concrete wall panels is largely based on past experimental observations, and the design of their anchorage to the roof is largely based on past failure observations. These observations have been pivotal in developing rational design requirements, and often these observations have had surprising outcomes. Without understanding the past, design engineers are at risk of repeating previous failures. During this SE University session, presenter John Lawson, PE, SE, from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, educated engineers on the current design provisions for tilt-up concrete walls and their proper anchorage, and showed how these provisions are linked to the past.
