Seismic Design – Appropriate Implementation of the Overstrength Omega o Factor (12:30pm – 2pm Eastern)
AISC 360, Chapter K underwent a significant change in the 2016 Specification. This SE University presentation provided the background for the changes and an overview of the updates, as well as illustrated that the differences are not as extreme as they appear at first glance. During the presentation, Kim Olson, PE, of Nucor, reviewed the Limit State Tables developed by the Steel Tube Institute as a “roadmap” for navigating the new specification. Several design examples, including a shear connection, truss connection, and moment connection, were presented, to illustrate differences between AISC 360-10 and AISC 360-16 in HSS connection design.
