The design, detailing, and fabrication processes for HSS members are quite different from those typically employed for open steel section members and plates. This all-encompassing SEU session on HSS welding will help designers de-mystify some of the complexities of HSS fabrication. Practical tips for designing and specifying welds and how to best apply AISC code provisions specific to HSS welds will be explored.

  • Identify factors that contribute to difficult HSS fabrication and how to avoid them.
  • Understand how and when HSS member access affects weld choices.
  • Compare suitability of CJP vs PJP welds in HSS sections.
  • Review welding positions and qualifications.
