Seismic Design – Appropriate Implementation of the Overstrength Omega o Factor (12:30pm – 2pm Eastern)
Floor vibrations due to occupant activities continue to be of concern for structural engineers. Today’s structures are often lightweight and have little inherent damping, increasing the potential for annoying vibrations to exist.
This session focused on typical reasons that annoying vibrations exist, the properties of the floor system that do (or do not) affect the vibration performance of the floor, and some tips that architects and engineers can use to minimize vibration issues in a floor system. In addition, the use of commercial software to analyze a floor system was discussed by means of a case study of an existing floor system with perceptible vibrations due to walking.
Session Length: 1.5 hours
