Seismic Design – Appropriate Implementation of the Overstrength Omega o Factor (12:30pm – 2pm Eastern)
This session reviewed IBC requirements for roof structures related to ponding and roof drainage issues. The discussion addressed the requirement that the roof structure be engineered for standing water weight in the vicinity of the drains and scuppers, regardless of the roof slope. Information was also presented for low slope roofs, which can require special attention for water weight and stiffness for safety against ponding issues. During the session, John Lawson, SE, a professor at Cal Poly, SLO, provided an overview of the various disciplines involved in removing rain water from roofs, as well as a suggested approach for engineers to comply with code requirements.
