Session Description

Seismically retrofitting existing buildings creates special and unique challenges for design and construction teams. These challenges often require creative and ingenious solutions from the design teams. There are also many solutions that have been analytically tried that have not been successful. This SEU session will explore several examples of seismic retrofitting of structures using buckling restrained braces and steel, looking at the unique, the effective, and the not-so-effective approaches.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify frequent problems with seismically inadequate buildings.
  • Understand how Buckling Restrained Braced Frames are used to address inadequacies in buildings (standard and non-standard configurations).
  • Understand some of the requirements for retrofit that are included in ASCE 7-22 and ASCE 41-17.
