ICC-ES AC58 (Acceptance Criteria for Adhesive Anchors in Cracked and Uncracked Masonry Elements) was originally approved in 1995 and encompassed an allowable stress design method. In this SEU Presentation, speakers Tom Tarcha and Mark Jarvinen will look at how this criteria was changed in 2019 and how it will affect adhesive anchor designs moving forward. They will show how post-installed adhesive anchor products for masonry base materials are tested, qualified, and designed as well as fundamental concepts that require consideration of cracked masonry service conditions. During the presentation, they will also provide design examples showing the new calculation method for several tension failure modes when designing adhesive anchors in fully-grouted concrete masonry unit assemblies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize the history of adhesive anchor qualification for masonry base materials
  • Explain essential principles of adhesive anchor testing per ICC ES AC58
  • Recite failure modes associated with adhesive anchor calculations in cracked and uncracked masonry
  • Identify how service condition, type of masonry, and installation provisions are incorporated into the new design provisions and specifications
