ASCE/SEI 7 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures is a nationally adopted standard for the analysis and design of buildings and other structures. The 2016 edition of this consensus standard was adopted into the 2018 and 2021 International Building Codes, and ASCE 7-22 was published this month (December 2021).

This SEU session will include discussion of the changes to the 2016 wind chapters, with a preview of the changes in the 2022 wind chapters, including the new chapter on tornado loads. The discussion of the 2016 wind chapters will include the maps, revisions of the GCp values for components and cladding, including design examples, along with a comparison between 7-10 and 7-16 wind roof pressures. The discussion of the 2022 wind chapters will include modest changes to the maps, removal of the tabular methods, and comparing wind loads to tornado loads.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the significant updates to the wind provisions in ASCE 7-16.
  • Understand the differences between ASCE 7-10 and 7-16 low-rise components and cladding roof pressures.
  • Understand the wind chapter changes between ASCE 7-16 and 7-22, including tornado provisions.
