Precast, prestressed concrete thin planks can be used as stay-in-place formwork for the placement of a field cast topping to form a composite slab. While this type of construction is common in bridge decks, it is more unusual in parking garages and buildings, except in parts of the Northeast United States. This SEU Session will discuss the methods of investigating a parking structure with prestressed thin slab members, highlighting benefits of regular maintenance, and discuss options for repair in these types of parking garages.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common deficiencies associated with prestressed thin slab members when used in parking structures
  • Understand methods of investigating a parking structure and the resulting benefits of regular maintenance
  • Compare methods of repairing precast prestressed thin slab members
