Perhaps the most common, and often “thorny,” ethical issues that engineers face arise from the rules governing conflicts of interest. Learning to spot and resolve these issues, without breaching other ethical obligations, is essential to engineering practice. This SEU Session will help you understand what a conflict is and why we are bound by ethics rules that regulate them. It will familiarize you with typical conflicts-related ethics rules and their usual features. Finally, it will help you learn to identify conflicts and apply the rules to resolve them.

Learning Objectives:

  • Know the definition of a conflict of interest (“conflict”).
  • Understand why ethics rules regulate conflicts.
  • Be familiar with the basics of conflict rules.
  • Learn to identify conflicts.
  • Learn to apply conflicts rules to common situations.
