This SEU presentation summarizes the tornado shelter provisions found in ICC 500, the standard’s history, as well as IBC mandate language. It also addresses the basic architectural content requirements and structural design content for wind pressure and projectile protection, as well as key specialized construction QA/QC requirements. In addition, the presentation will share examples illustrating effective masonry solutions for shelter walls, including insights into tornado shelter design using masonry walls for structure and envelope. Topics discussed will include CMU shelter wall optimization, shelter roof type selection, load-path anchoring of CMU walls to shelter roofs and foundations, and shelter quality assurance considerations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize basic IBC and ICC 500 tornado shelter design and construction mandate and requirements.
  • Describe shelter wall optimization using masonry as envelope and structure.
  • Recognize the impact of tornado sheltering on school and critical emergency operations projects.
