The Omega o Overstrength factor is a key element in seismic design philosophy. Determining when it is required is often challenging during structural design. Overstrength only needs to be used where specifically directed to do so. Those triggers are defined in ASCE 7 and the material standards AISC 341, ACI 318, TMS 402, AWC SPWSD. This SEU presentation will provide a comprehensive listing of where, when, and how the Overstrength factor is triggered and implemented. A Checklist style document for Omega o triggers will be presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify what the Overstrength Omega o factor is, and why it is required.
  • Describe where the Overstrength triggers are located in the Load and Material standards.
  • List proper uses of when, and when not, to implement Overstrength Omega o factor by examining examples.
