Session Details

1.5 PDHs / 0.2 IACET CEUs

Steel joist, metal deck and fasteners are often components of the diaphragm for wind or seismic lateral load systems. This webinar focuses on practical methods to introduce shear into the system, redistribution of shear within the diaphragm, and transfer of shear to collectors, frames or shear walls. Additional discussion items include rigid vs flexible, strength vs stiffness, and connection design.

Learning Objectives

  • Verify that traditional shear mechanics always work.
  • Understand how a shear stiffness analysis can be used in lieu of designating a diaphragm as rigid or flexible.
  • Review component capacities and limitations for joist, deck and fasteners.
  • Identify online tools that can be used to simplify the design process.
