Session Description:

The Design of Moment Frames for Lateral Loads can be a challenge for engineers. Typically, owners and architects want to minimize bracing in buildings for more usable space and future adaptability of buildings. Selection of the most economical frame based on R factor, detailing requirements, performance, and different connection types is important as engineers decide if moment frames are the best solution for their building. This presentation will cover the four commonly selected moment frame systems, and how each system has various design and detailing requirements that are addressed in AISC 341. Finally, the connections prescribed in AISC 358 will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the 4 types of moment frames that are allowed by building code, and how to choose based on seismic criteria.
  • Define AISC 341 Design Provisions for SMF, IMF, and OMF systems.
  • Review AISC 358 connection types and why you would choose to select one for a project.
