This session provides a practical overview of the major changes to the wind provisions in ASCE 7-22. Topics include updated basic wind speed maps and wind-borne debris regions, changes to the available analytical and tabular procedures, and key revisions affecting elevated buildings, nonrectangular buildings, rooftop equipment, screen walls, canopies, roof pavers, and ground-mounted solar panels. The session also introduces the new tornado load provisions in Chapter 32 and uses design examples to demonstrate their application to main wind force resisting systems and components and cladding. Additional discussion will address performance-based wind design, temporary structures, and anticipated changes in future codes and standards.
Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the significant changes to the ASCE 7-22 wind provisions and determine when they affect the design of buildings and common rooftop elements.
  • Differentiate among the ASCE 7-22 procedures for determining MWFRS and components and cladding wind loads and select an appropriate procedure for a given building.
  • Evaluate whether the ASCE 7-22 tornado provisions apply to a building and calculate the applicable tornado design pressures.
