New MI Continuing Education Hour Requirements

In October 2013, new rules went into effect requiring Michigan Engineers to complete Continuing Education Hours (equivalent to PDHs) in order to renew their Professional Engineer License. Read the announcement from MSPE for more information.

The first renewal date that will require continuing education is October 31, 2015, with continuing education hours to be earned between November 1, 2013 and October 31, 2015. (For engineers renewing  licenses on October 31, 2016, you must start earning continuing education hours on November 1, 2014.)

Professional engineers will be required to earn 30 hours per renewal period. Review the specific details of the Continuing Education Rules as stated by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

SE University can help you with your Continuing Education!

Q) Will SE university sessions count for Michigan hours?

A) Yes. The rules allow for distance learning to be used to meet the continuing education requirements. Distance learning is defined to include:

(i) Courses where an instructor and a licensee may be apart and instruction takes place through online or electronic media.

SE University will meet these requirements.

Q) What if I watch a RECORDING of an SE University session?

A) The LARA language does not specifically address recorded sessions. HOWEVER, the following is stated in item 5b under R339.16041 from the LARA link above:

(5) Continuing education hours shall not be earned for any of the following activities:

(b) Completing a course that does not provide a licensee access to an instructor during the course.

Because of this clause, we will provide specific “Office Hours” so that if you watch a recorded SE University session, you will be able to submit questions by email at that time. This will allow you to have access to an instructor during the course.

As always, all SE University recordings will include the Q & A of the engineers that attended the live session.

If you have any questions about the new requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact Brian Quinn or Lisa Willard.
