Seismic Design – Appropriate Implementation of the Overstrength Omega o Factor (12:30pm – 2pm Eastern)
This SE University session addressed the usage of tuned mass dampers to control floor vibrations. Following a short introduction to floor vibration and commonly used vibration mitigation practices, the concept of tuned damping was discussed. The session continued with the introduction of tuned mass dampers including their
make-up, optimal design, and installation. After reviewing case studies, the design of tuned mass dampers for a floor system was demonstrated. The session ended with a brief discussion of other applications of tuned mass dampers. An Excel spreadsheet containing an optimal design procedure/routine for tuned mass dampers was provided to the participants.
Session Length: 1.5 hours
