Open web steel joists are utilized in high performance floors to achieve superior design characteristics with less weight, lower costs, and lower carbon footprint than steel beams. During this SEU Session, engineers will learn how to design floors to leverage the advantages of open web steel joists for a better performing finished building with lower weight and smaller carbon footprint, lower floor-to-floor heights, improved floor vibration characteristics, flatter finished floors with more consistent concrete thickness, and reduced cost.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify what spacings and depths work best for open web steel joists in floors.
  • Explain how to decrease floor-to-floor height while increasing the joist depth.
  • Understand the advantages of flush-frame joists with bolted shear tab connections in floor construction.
  • Compare performance and costs of different steel framing options using the new Steel Joist Institute (SJI) Floor Bay Comparison Tool.
