With land costs skyrocketing and resources becoming more limited, owners, developers and municipalities are targeting existing buildings for housing, retail, industry and business. Structural engineers are being asked to help save, reuse and retrofit these existing buildings at a rate that has not been seen before. Most jurisdictions are using the International Existing Building Code (IEBC) as the governing set of regulations for existing buildings. There are several unique ways that the IEBC differs from the International Building Code (IBC), with some of the most critical differences being both important and challenging. This SEU Session will explore how the IEBC can be used for an existing building, including general terms and procedures in the Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings, ASCE 41.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify differences between the International Existing Building Code and the International Building Code.
  • Understand how ASCE 41 works within the IEBC context for buildings located in seismically active regions.
  • Recognize when certain IEBC requirements are applicable to specific buildings and how that affects projects within those buildings and specific areas within the building.
