Speaker:
Erica Fischer, PhD, PE
Date:
July 9, 2025
Session Details

Mass timber has been increasing in popularity in recent years due to its aesthetic, reduced carbon footprint, and lightweight nature. The increased popularity has brought fire protection design into the forefront to enable exposed timber within buildings and enable taller timber structures. This presentation will provide foundational knowledge on mass timber and fire, an overview of what is currently allowed in codes and standards, and an outline of how to employ performance-based fire design in buildings to enable more exposed mass timber.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify current code and standard guidance for fire protection design for mass timber
  • Recognize current research on mass timber and fire to enable performance-based design
  • Summarize challenges with mass timber and fire
