Refining Wind Load Approaches for Non-building Structures (12:30pm – 2:00pm Eastern)

Speaker:
Emily M. Guglielmo, SE, PE / Martin/Martin Consulting Engineers
Date:
March 12, 2025
Session Details

1.5 PDHs / 0.2 IACET CEUs

This session will explore how to properly interpret and apply ASCE 7 wind load provisions for non-building structures, including rooftop equipment, screenwalls, PV panels, signs, and canopies. In addition to standard provisions, we’ll examine engineering approaches for situations not explicitly covered in the code, such as wind loads on trellises, balcony rails, and tall parapets.  Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of wind loads on non-building structures and practical strategies for addressing these challenges in their designs.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply ASCE 7 wind load provisions to non-building structures, including rooftop equipment, screenwalls, PV panels, signs, and canopies.
  • Evaluate wind loads on structures not explicitly addressed in ASCE 7, such as trellises, tall parapets, and balcony rails.
  • Develop engineering strategies to address gaps in code provisions for non-building structures using rational analysis and industry best practices.
