In 2022, ACI re-approved the 2019 edition of ACI 318, Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete, with updated references. The 2019 edition had introduced significant revisions which impacted design and detailing. This SEU Session will highlight shear strength provisions (Chapter 22), two-way slab design (Chapter 13), anchoring-to-concrete requirements (Chapter 17), and seismic detailing (Chapter 18). Load combinations (Chapter 5) and material specifications (Chapter 19) will also be reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on the implications of these chapters for structural safety, constructability, and compliance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how ACI 318-19(22) can be used for shear design, two-way slab provisions, anchoring-to-concrete, and seismic detailing.
  • Understand the technical rationale behind ACI 318-19(22) and its broader impact on structural safety, resilience, and constructability.
  • Summarize the two-way slab design provisions in ACI 318-19(22) and their implications for structural safety and design practice.
