Perhaps the most sobering, albeit uncommon, ethical dilemma engineers face is whether and when they must report a situation—a client, or a project—to the authorities. Spotting these situations, understanding the nuances of the relevant rules, and learning to apply them is critical to ethical engineering practice. This SEU Session will help explain the origin of “duty to report” rules, and common features in those rules. It will familiarize you with potentially conflicting and related rules. Finally, it will help you learn how to apply “duty to report” rules.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the origin of engineers’ duties to the public.
  • Describe “duty to report” rules, and common features in those rules.
  • Identify potentially conflicting and related rules.
  • Demonstrate how to apply “duty to report” rules.
