Concrete Flat Plate Design

Speaker:
Michael Sheridan, PE, SE, Allen & Hoshall, Inc.
Date:
September 8, 2021
Session Details

1.5 PDH

This SE University session will present an overview of the gravity design of a nonprestressed conventionally reinforced concrete flat plate slab system. During the session, presenter Michael Sheridan of Allen & Hoshall will use a real-world design example to review the requirements of the loads, live load reduction, equivalent frame method provisions, slab thickness selection, and punching shear, focused on the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-14) code. Throughout the design example, the reasoning behind the system requirements will also be presented to allow for a better understanding of the overall design process.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the basic concepts of nonprestressed flat plate load distribution using the Equivalent Frame Method (EFM), as defined in ACI 318-14.
  • Understand nonprestressed flat plate design processes including, bending design, deflection computation, and punching shear.
