In early times, when computers weren’t essential (or even available), one objective of steel designers was to discover elegant, simple, and appropriately accurate computational methods. These quick rules of thumb became go-to resources for structural engineers. Despite the advent of computers, these quick approaches retain their value for making on-the-spot intelligent decisions, developing a reasonable solution for computer input, and quickly verifying the validity of computer output. This SEU presentation provides many useful rules of thumb for steel design.

Learning Objectives:

  • Derive approximations for mechanical properties of steel sections.
  • Identify rules of thumb for steel beams, columns, truss design.
  • Illustrate use of rules of thumb in design examples.
